North Korea plans to contribute to the Russian war effort by sending between 25,000 and 30,000 additional troops in the coming months, according to anonymous Ukrainian sources cited by the US network CNN.

At the end of last year, North Korea had already sent approximately 11,000 troops to Russia, who joined the Russian forces seeking to repel Ukrainian troops occupying part of the territory of the Russian Kursk region, which borders Ukraine. Of the 11,000 North Korean fighters sent by Pyongyang to the war in Ukraine, 4,000 have been killed or wounded in combat, according to Kyiv.

In addition to sending troops, North Korea is also assisting Russia in this war by supplying ballistic missiles and significant quantities of artillery ammunition.

The pact between the two countries was signed on June 18, 2024, by North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Pyongyang. It comes amid strengthening ties between Russia and North Korea, and North Korea's support for Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
