This new device will undoubtedly contribute to the development of France's military capabilities. Thanks to a combination of thermal and electric propulsion, the autonomy and flexibility of the aircraft are significantly improved.

The hybrid DT46 is an observation drone designed by the company Delair, in partnership with Ascendance. It could soon be used for reconnaissance and surveillance missions.

In a few words, the hybrid DT46 is based on the DT46, an existing observation drone already in use by the French Army's artillery units. This new device "integrates the hybrid-electric Sterna propulsion system developed by Ascendance, a technology that allows switching between a thermal engine and an electric drive," according to the Science & Vie website. The objective? To improve both the versatility and autonomy of the drone. While its electric version had an autonomy of 3h30 in vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) mode, the hybrid DT46 can operate for 5h30.

In testing phase

Thanks to an in-flight recharging system, during rapid movements, the drone can both perform discreet hovering (during observation) and cover vast areas at high speed. As noted by Science & Vie, the hybrid DT46 can travel at 100km/h at an altitude of 1000 metres, while maintaining "a fixed position before moving to another strategic point".

Currently in the testing phase, this new device could be adopted by several branches of the military, particularly the French naval forces , which could replace some ships for surveillance missions. If its performance is proven, it would also be used in collaborative combat.

The hybrid DT46 is a perfect example of the current development by major French industrial companies in the field of drones.
