US President Donald Trump has claimed that he has made no progress with Vladimir Putin to end the war in Ukraine, while the Kremlin has insisted that the Russian president will stick to his guns in the conflict.

Trump's disheartening assessment comes as US-led peace talks to end the conflict in Ukraine, which has lasted for more than three years, have stalled, and after Washington suspended some arms shipments to Kiev.

"It was quite a long call; we talked about many subjects, including Iran, and also, as you know, the war in Ukraine. And I'm not happy with that," Trump told reporters.

The telephone conversation between the President of the United States and the President of Russia lasted almost an hour and was their sixth exchange this year. Vladimir Putin informed Donald Trump that Russia was respecting the humanitarian measures agreed with Ukraine during the last negotiations in Istanbul, and assured him that Russia remained willing to continue the dialogue with Ukraine.

"Vladimir Putin emphasised that we continue to seek a political and negotiated solution to the conflict," said Trump, adding that there had been no specific mention of a third round of negotiations between Moscow and Kiev.
