NATO has expressed concern over the possibility that Russia might detonate nuclear bombs in space — a move that could damage thousands of satellites orbiting Earth.

Mark Rutte, the Secretary General of the military alliance, emphasized that the satellites surrounding the planet play a crucial role in protecting populations.

"We are aware of reports that Russia is considering placing nuclear weapons in space," he told the German newspaper Welt am Sonntag.

"The development of nuclear weapons in space is a way for Russia to enhance its capabilities. This is very concerning," he added.

If Moscow were to actually deploy nuclear warheads into space, satellites belonging to numerous countries — not just Ukraine — would be affected.

"NATO allies are adapting to the challenges in space, including sharing intelligence, establishing national space command centers, and developing smaller satellites that are more maneuverable and better protected," Rutte said.
