NASA has acknowledged that a massive hole recently discovered on Mars—measuring 91 meters across—could potentially be a “portal” leading to another dimension.

The U.S. space agency shared an image of the mysterious pit on Sunday as part of its Astronomy Picture of the Day series. The discovery has sparked speculation among researchers about what lies beneath the planet’s surface.

Holes such as this are of particular interest because they might be portals to lower levels that extend into expansive underground caves,” NASA scientists explained.

If so, these naturally occurring tunnels are relatively protected from the harsh surface of Mars, making them relatively good candidates to contain Martian life,” they added.

Researchers also raised the possibility that the pit may serve as an entrance or exit to a vast underground network—and that it could become a high-priority target for future exploration.

These pits are therefore also prime targets for possible future spacecraft, robots, and even human interplanetary explorers,” NASA said.
