Mexico has filed a formal complaint against Google after the U.S. tech giant responded to a request by Donald Trump by renaming the “Gulf of Mexico” as the “Gulf of America” for American users.

On Thursday, Republican lawmakers in the House of Representatives passed legislation changing the geographic name, with Democrats voting against the measure.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum responded by announcing that her government had lodged a legal complaint against the company.

Back in February, Sheinbaum had already threatened to sue Google unless it reversed the change.

All we want is for the decree issued by the U.S. government to be properly interpreted. The U.S. only renamed the portion of its own continental shelf as the Gulf of America — not the entire gulf — because it doesn't have the authority to rename the entire body of water,” she said.

Despite this dispute, both neighboring countries are currently in talks to reach an agreement on U.S. tariffs.
