The past month of March was on average the warmest March ever recorded in Europe, according to the European climate service Copernicus.

The climate service started its measurements in 1940. Since then, March in Europe has never been on average warmer than in 2025, with an average temperature in Europe of 6.03 degrees Celsius, 2.41 degrees higher than the average for the period between 1991 and 2020.

“March 2025 was the warmest March for Europe highlighting once again how temperatures are continuing to break records", said Samantha Burgess of the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), in a press release from Copernicus.

"It was also a month with contrasting rainfall extremes across Europe with many areas experiencing their driest March on record and others their wettest March on record for at least the past 47 years."

Especially in Eastern Europe and Southwest Russia, temperatures were higher than normal. On the Iberian Peninsula, however, it was colder than average.
