The strategy was established by the Wagner private militia during the battle of Bakhmut (a city in eastern Ukraine) between 2022 and 2023. It's making a significant return to the front, three years later.

According to the Ukrainian press, the tactic of Russian "camels" has just reappeared in the war zone. It involves using unarmed soldiers as "camels," solely intended to transport military equipment and weaponry. Equipped only with a bulletproof vest, they are tasked with resupplying soldiers fighting on the front line.

Camels, too easy targets

However, the increased presence of drones now poses a challenge for these soldiers who become easy targets, whereas the use of remote-controlled unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs) was perfectly adequate.

On January 18th, the Kyiv Post published a video showing one of these infamous Russian "camels" being killed by what appears to be a sniper shot, right after being identified by a Ukrainian drone in the Donetsk region.
