On the battlefield, Ukrainians and Russians use inventiveness to surprise the opponent. And on the Ukrainian side, it's worn fishing nets that are now hitting the mark.
An unusual and inexpensive defence solution against Russian drones. As reported by the Ukrainian reporting platform Frontliner, Zelensky's armed forces are deploying old fishing nets from the Netherlands to protect their equipment and positions on the front line. Several hundred tonnes of these nets have already been delivered to Ukraine via the foundation "Volonter".
One of the members of “Volonter”, Igor Bondartschuk, highlights: “We persuaded our Dutch partners to give the nets to Ukraine for free. We only have to bear the logistics costs.” These unusual protective nets are used like traditional nets: they're used to cover and camouflage trenches as well as military equipment to protect them from Russian drone attacks.
According to Frontliner, thanks to the fishing nets, drones or dropped projectiles can be intercepted but also bounced back. “Tanks and armoured vehicles, when covered with such nets, are hardly accessible to Russian attacks,” states a foundation official. However, care must be taken to ensure that the deployment of these nets doesn't impede the freedom of movement of the fighters or cause hindrance during shooting. Thus, as reported by a Ukrainian soldier to Frontliner, the most advanced positions are less well protected.
