Every year, the Association of Cities for Urban Cleanliness (AVPU) awards 'stars' to the cleanest French cities. Which city will top the list in 2025?
This year, the city of Antibes was voted the cleanest city in France, earning its fifth star. As reported by the media outlet Demotivateur, the Normandy city of Le Havre also reached the same level thanks to its fifth star. They now join the group of French cities that have already received awards: Cannes, Nice, Saint-Brieuc, Niort, and Metz.
And this year, other cities such as Rennes, Nantes, and Pau also managed to earn a place in the ranking, earning their fourth star. The goal of these famous stars? To encourage local authorities to focus on cleanliness and impose appropriate measures.
How do you obtain the distinction?
According to the AVPU (French Public Public Service), to be eligible for the award, you must "initiate action plans to sustainably improve the cleanliness of public spaces." The association thus highlights "the means implemented to reduce littering through sustainable improvements in user behavior." These include, for example, the introduction of fines for littering on public roads.
Conversely, the city of Marseille, in a recent European Commission report, was voted the third dirtiest and least safe city in Europe.
