Iran's parliament has voted in favor of closing the Strait of Hormuz in response to U.S. attacks on the country’s nuclear infrastructure.

While lawmakers have approved the measure, the final decision rests with the Supreme National Security Council and Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The Strait of Hormuz is a strategically vital passage through which about 20% of the world’s oil supply is transported, lying between Oman and Iran.

Experts warn that any disruption could send global oil prices soaring by 30% to 50% almost immediately.

The U.S. carried out multiple strikes early Sunday as part of “Operation Midnight Hammer,” targeting nuclear facilities in Isfahan, Fordow, and Natanz. Two B-2 bombers flew over Iran and dropped 14 Massive Ordnance Penetrator (MOP) bombs on two of the sites, while the third was hit by Tomahawk cruise missiles.

Iran has long warned it could block the Strait in the event of escalating tensions. Meanwhile, Washington is now calling for a negotiated agreement to avoid further escalation.
