Iran can now build ‘several’ nuclear bombs warns UN

Iran has further increased its stockpile of uranium enriched to near weapons-grade levels while carrying out secret nuclear activities, according to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

A recent report from the Vienna-based agency states that, as of May 17, the Middle Eastern country had accumulated 408.6 kg of uranium enriched to 60% purity — an increase of 133.8 kg since February.

The IAEA now says it is “concerned” that Iran may be close to assembling nuclear weapons. The agency’s director, Rafael Mariano Grossi, added that Tehran has enough material to build “several” atomic bombs.

Another IAEA report notes that traces of uranium were found at two to four undisclosed sites, suggesting that secret testing has taken place.

These revelations could prompt Western countries to reinstate sanctions against Iran, which were lifted in 2015.

The news comes as Washington and Tehran have yet to reach a new nuclear agreement.
