The Spanish holiday island of Ibiza has had enough of the overcrowding caused by mass tourism. That’s why it is implementing special measures from 1 June until 30 September.
Ibiza welcomes around 3 million tourists each year, while the island itself has only 160,000 residents. Most of these visitors arrive during the summer months, which causes significant disruption. Local traffic is particularly affected. The number of cars on Ibiza has quadrupled over the last 20 years, from 51,000 in 2002 to 207,000 in 2022.
Ibiza wants to put a stop to'overtourism' during the peak season. For example, there will be a cap on the number of vehicles belonging to non-residents allowed on the island. Only 20,168 cars belonging to non-residents will be permitted during the high season. Of these, only 16,000 can be rental vehicles. The other 4,168 are reserved for tourists who wish to come to Ibiza with their own car via the ports of Barcelona, Denia, Valencia or Palma.
