Hungary has argued that Ukraine should not be allowed to join the European Union, claiming it would damage the Hungarian economy.

According to Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, the war in Ukraine—now in its fourth year—has already had a negative impact on Hungary’s economy. He added that Hungary would have suffered less had the funds sent to Ukraine remained within the EU.

"However, European leaders continue to pursue war and support Ukraine even against the will of the US leadership. We cannot finance and support Ukraine and the Ukrainian army without the United States," the Hungarian leader stated.

Orbán emphasized that the financial support provided to Ukraine has allowed it to maintain a strong military.

He also noted that the European Commission wants Ukraine to join the EU by 2030, warning that such an accession would be harmful to Hungary’s economy.
