Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has cast doubt on Russia's capacity to launch an attack against NATO, noting that Moscow has struggled to defeat Ukraine after more than three years of war.

The Russians are too weak for that. They’re not even capable of defeating Ukraine, so they're incapable of really attacking NATO,” Orbán said in an interview with French TV channel LCI.

His comments come as Russian forces intensify their assaults in the Sumy and Dnipropetrovsk regions, while peace talks between Moscow and Kyiv remain stalled, despite a recent exchange of prisoners of war.

As part of any peace deal, Russia is demanding that Ukraine never join NATO and that Ukrainian forces withdraw from regions partially controlled by Russia.

Orbán — one of Vladimir Putin’s only allies within the European Union — argued that it is not in Hungary’s or the EU’s interest to be in direct conflict with Russia and that Ukraine should not join the military alliance.

“Europe must be strengthened in the long term, and there must be a strategic agreement with Russia,” he said.
