Historic meeting concluded without ceasefire

The summit between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin ended without an agreement to end the war in Ukraine. After weeks of anticipation and a lavish After welcoming Putin to the Anchorage military base in Alaska, the two leaders met for about three hours but failed to make progress toward a ceasefire or present a concrete solution to the conflict.

Donald Trump acknowledged that, while there were "many points on which we agreed," some issues remained unresolved, including "one of the most important," without specifying which one.

For his part, Vladimir Putin insisted that a lasting resolution to the conflict would only be possible if Ukraine abandoned its aspirations to join NATO and withdrew from the regions occupied by Russia: Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, and Zaporozhye.

Trump and Putin issued a brief statement without specifying the progress made and declined to answer questions from the press. They also did not attend the originally scheduled diplomatic lunch.

After the summit, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky held a "long and substantive" conversation with the American president and is expected to travel to Washington soon.

Analysts say the lack of agreement benefits Putin because it helps maintain the current momentum favoring Russia in this war of attrition.
