Northeast Bohemia (Czechia) is slowly revealing its secrets.
Walkers near the town of Trutnov, on the southwestern slopes of the Zvičina Hill, have stumbled upon a remarkable treasure.
At the edge of a former field, now overgrown with trees and bushes, they found a small aluminium tin containing 600 coins, arranged in 11 stacks. Just one metre further, they found an iron box with sixteen cigarette holders, ten bracelets, a small purse made of wire, a comb, a chain and a gunpowder tin. All made of gold! It turns out to be a particularly valuable treasure.
In total, the hoard weighs 7 kilograms, of which 4 kilograms are gold coins valued at over 300,000 euros. Archaeologists are examining the find but currently have no idea how the treasure ended up in the ground or who might have hidden it there. It would have been buried after 1921 at the earliest, as this year is mentioned on one of the coins. Experts have thoroughly analysed the treasure and discovered that the coins are of French, Turkish, Belgian, and Austro-Hungarian origin. Other coins are from Romania, Italy, and Russia.
Could there be more treasures buried in Bohemia?
