To scoop the jackpot in the lottery, you have two options: spend a few pounds and hope luck is on your side, or wager millions and leave nothing to chance.

The latter option is what a group of Swiss players chose: for 2 million Swiss francs, nearly 1.8 million pounds, they decided to play all possible combinations of the "Joker", according to L’Indépendant.

These unusually high bets caught the attention of the Loterie Romande, which temporarily stopped the betting. But the group, nicknamed the "lottery gang", had already validated 80% of the possible combinations: total bets of 1.4 million pounds (four chances out of five of winning the jackpot).

As reported by L’Indépendant, thanks to the right combination of six numbers, eleven tickets worth 9,000 francs with five numbers out of six, and other trailing prizes, the Swiss players took home 2.5 million francs. Nearly three months after their operation, the "lottery gang" has yet to receive their winnings. However, according to information from the daily Tribune de Genève, they're expected to receive the full 2.8 million pounds they won.

This is all perfectly legal

A source close to the group of players confirmed to the Swiss daily that this manoeuvre is "perfectly legal". One of the players explained: "The goal is to ensure the legality of the operation, conducted with clean money, to prevent any challenge from the operator." "The Joker was in the category of a less frequented game, which limited competition for the winnings, and it had an attractive ratio between the jackpot and the amount to invest to be certain of winning."

However, it is said that the Loterie Romande may revise its game rules to prevent others from "pulling the same trick".
