Germany acts desperately to counter Russian threat

Germany’s Defense Ministry has hinted at the possible reintroduction of compulsory military service as the country looks to bolster its armed forces in response to the growing threat from Russia.

NATO member states have recently taken steps to prepare for a potential offensive from Moscow, especially after Russia deployed troops and military equipment to its border with Finland.

The new German government, led by Chancellor Friedrich Merz, has announced plans to invest billions of euros into strengthening the military. According to sources cited by Reuters, Defense Minister Boris Pistorius is seeking to increase the defense budget from €52 billion to €60 billion.

Speaking at a conference in Berlin, Pistorius also stated that military spending could rise to 5% of GDP in the coming years.

As part of these efforts, the government intends to send out questionnaires to all 18-year-old Germans, asking about their physical health and willingness to serve in the military.
