Germany has declared it will not back down and has urged Europe to respond “firmly” after U.S. President Donald Trump announced a 25% tariff on automobiles that are not manufactured on American soil.

Like Berlin, Paris has condemned the move, calling it a “waste of time,” while Canada has described the decision as a “direct and incoherent attack.” Meanwhile, China has accused Trump of violating international trade regulations.

Following the announcement, shares of several global automakers saw a sharp decline.

Trump has also threatened even harsher sanctions if Europe aligns itself with Canada, warning that such an alliance would pose an “economic threat.”

The new tariffs are set to take effect on April 2.
