A 59-year-old businessman and animal lover has died in Namibia following an attack by a lioness.
The man, originally from Germany but holding Namibian nationality, was surprised by the animal during a camping trip with his wife and friends in Hoanib Skeleton Coast Reserve, a nature reserve in the north of the country. When he left his tent early in the morning, he was attacked by a lioness. Other campers managed to chase the animal away, but all help for the man came too late. He died at the scene. So reports police spokesperson Elifas Kuwinga.
The Namibian Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism reports that the lioness in question was tracked down and killed by authorities because she posed a danger to surrounding communities.
The 59-year-old victim was a philanthropist who supported the conservation of wildlife, and in particular the rare species of lion, in Namibia.
