For four years, a German couple kept their three sons captive in a villa in the Spanish village of Fitoria, a place with 200 inhabitants near Oviedo.

The children, twin boys aged 8 and another boy aged 10, were placed under the care of child protection services after police raided their home and arrested the parents.

The police had observed the family for some time before deciding to intervene. A neighbour reportedly heard children's voices for a while, and there were unusually large grocery purchases for a household supposedly inhabited by a lone man.

According to the Spanish local newspaper 'Diario de Girona', the boys, who anxiously clung to their mother, were wearing shoes that were far too small and had been bought in 2019. They wore nappies and had to wear three face masks layered on top of each other all day. Everything was sealed shut, and there was no ventilation. "They were dirty, wore pyjamas, and were clearly neglected." The house was reportedly filled with rubbish, even under the beds. The police also found a large amount of medication in the horror house.

Spanish media report that the couple apparently lost track of reality during the Covid pandemic. The children no longer attended school, no doctor was ever visited, and the curtains and shutters at home were always closed.

The Spanish judge has stripped the parents of their parental rights. They remain in prison for the time being.
