French President Emmanuel Macron has strongly criticized the United States over threats related to its interest in acquiring Greenland.
During a visit to the Arctic territory, which belongs to Denmark, Macron reaffirmed the solidarity of both France and the European Union with Greenland.
“It’s important that Denmark and the Europeans commit themselves to this territory, where the strategic stakes are very high and whose territorial integrity must be respected,” he said.
Since returning to the White House, U.S. President Donald Trump has made clear his desire to take control of Greenland for both security reasons and access to its vast mineral resources beneath the ice sheet. Trump has not ruled out a military intervention to take control of the semi-autonomous territory.
While recent polls show that many of Greenland’s 57,000 residents favor independence from Denmark, they firmly oppose coming under American control.
Macron spent six hours in Greenland, meeting with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen during his visit.
Earlier this year, U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance visited the American military base in Pituffik, located in northern Greenland.
