Following the Russian strike on the city of Sumy, in the north-east of Ukraine, outrage quickly spread across the world, particularly in France.

Today, Paris is calling on the European Union to mobilise and impose “the heaviest sanctions” on Moscow to “stifle its economy”.

Upon his arrival at an EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting, held in Luxembourg, the French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot declared: “This weekend, horror in Ukraine reached its peak. It's a demonstration, if any were needed, of Vladimir Putin's contempt for the rules of war and his true intentions.”

He added: “That is why I'm calling on the European Union to impose the heaviest sanctions on Russia to stifle its economy and prevent it from fuelling its war effort.”
