France has denounced recent attempts at interference in Greenland, a territory long eyed by U.S. President Donald Trump.

Since his return to the White House, Trump has repeatedly expressed his desire to acquire the vast, ice-covered territory, which belongs to Denmark. He has even refused to rule out the possibility of taking it by force.

During a visit to Greenland’s capital, Nuuk, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot condemned what he described as Washington’s “unacceptable and disrespectful” actions.

Last week, Danish television revealed that three Americans close to Trump had carried out influence operations in Greenland.

The recent maneuvers are unacceptable and disrespectful. A nation’s greatness cannot be rebuilt on the servitude of its neighbors and allies, nor on ambitions of continental or hemispheric domination,” Barrot declared.

Greenland is not to be taken. Greenland is not for sale,” he added, echoing the words of President Emmanuel Macron, who visited the territory earlier this year.
