For Germany, Ukraine will join NATO

The new German government, led by Chancellor Friedrich Merz, believes that Ukraine has a real chance of joining both the European Union and NATO, a path it considers 'irreversible'.

This was stated by the German Foreign Minister, Johann Wadephul, in an interview with Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung.

Mr Wadephul emphasised that Ukraine had the opportunity to become a member of both the European Union and NATO.

'Within NATO, we have agreed together that Ukraine is on the path to joining the defence alliance, and that this path is irreversible,' he said.

It should be noted that Ukraine took a step towards NATO membership during the war by submitting an accelerated membership application in the autumn of 2022.

Ukraine has insisted on the need for a political decision that would include a clear roadmap for joining the Alliance. However, NATO member states have yet to make such a decision.

NATO officials continue to emphasise that the 'door remains open' for Ukraine, but that membership during wartime is not possible. US President Donald Trump, in particular, rejected the idea of Ukraine joining NATO.
