In September 2022, Moscow stated that 5,937 soldiers had lost their lives. Since then, there had been no further communication on the subject.

The former close adviser to the Russian president, Sergei Markov, recently stated on the Saudi television channel Al-Arabiya that Moscow was interested in peace. He added: “Yes, Vladimir Putin is very interested in peace, as this war has already cost Russia several hundred thousand lives.”

If this information is correct, the number of Russian casualties would be even higher than all Western and Ukrainian estimates. According to figures from the Ukrainian Ministry of Defence on Thursday, the number of Russian soldiers lost (killed or wounded) stands at around 977,650, according to the media outlet L’Indépendant.

Regarding deaths only, Ukraine revealed three months ago that they could reach 198,000. These estimates notably align with those from the British Ministry of Defence.
