Researchers have analysed a skull found in Indonesia in 2011 beneath the Indian Ocean and discovered it belonged to Homo erectus.

Homo erectus lived between around 1.8 million years ago and 110,000 years ago. Its appearance is estimated to date back 1.8 million years, primarily in Africa. It was Homo erectus that conquered the globe, tamed fire, and built huts during the Palaeolithic era. Subsequently, it spread into Asia and probably Europe.

Experts believe this is the first physical evidence of the lost world, a prehistoric landmass that once existed in what is now Southeast Asia. It would have been a vast tropical plain inhabited by human populations. An area now completely covered by ocean waters.

The remains were discovered in 2011, but only now have experts been able to identify the age and species of the skull.

Alongside the skull, around 6,000 animal fossils from 36 species, including Komodo dragons, buffalo, deer, and elephants, were also discovered.
