Egg prices in the United States have reached historic highs, with the once-basic food staple increasingly becoming a luxury item for American consumers.

For the third consecutive month, the cost of eggs has surged, hitting $6 per dozen in March.

Despite a reduced supply caused by outbreaks of avian flu, the nation’s largest egg producer reported record sales and profits.

Cal-Maine, which accounts for 20% of the eggs consumed in the country, posted $1 billion in revenue during the first quarter of this year.

"Egg prices are spiraling out of control, laying bare the cracks in our corporate food system," said Amanda Starbuck, research director at Food & Water Watch, a consumer advocacy group.

"To lower egg prices, the Trump administration must take on the food monopolies, hasten and prioritize its investigation into corporate price-fixing, and stop the spread of factory farms," she explained.
