During a Q&A session at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, Russian President Vladimir Putin once again declared that Ukraine belongs to Russia, reiterating a long-standing narrative that continues to fuel the ongoing conflict, now in its fourth year.
“I have said many times that I consider the Russian and Ukrainian people to be one nation. In this sense, all of Ukraine is ours,” Putin stated. He went on to add: “There is an old rule: ‘Where a Russian soldier sets foot, that is ours.’”
While the forum primarily focused on Russia’s financial challenges, Putin was questioned about his vision for ending the war. His response offered no signs of a shift in rhetoric or policy.
In his address, the Russian president also urged his government to take decisive action to prevent an economic downturn. “Some specialists and experts are pointing to the risks of stagnation or even recession. This, of course, is not to be allowed under any circumstances,” he warned.
Russia’s economy has been severely impacted by Western sanctions targeting its oil and gas exports, which account for roughly one-third of the country’s revenue. The situation has been worsened by falling global oil prices, driven in part by decisions from Saudi Arabia and Gulf states to lower production.
“Our most important task this year is to transition the economy to balanced growth—that means moderate inflation, low unemployment, and a continued positive economic trend,” Putin said. “It’s important to keep in focus all the indicators of how our sectors and companies are performing.”
