‘Cherished 51st State’: Trump touts benefits of joining US to Canada amid elections

Donald Trump has once again called for Canada to join the United States as the "51st state" as Canadians head to the polls to elect a new Prime Minister.

Following the resignation of Justin Trudeau, Mark Carney has been serving as interim Prime Minister while elections are organized. Carney had already pledged to defend his country against threats from the American president.

"Good luck to the Great people of Canada," Trump wrote on Truth Social, before adding: "Elect the man who has the strength and wisdom to cut your taxes in half, increase your military power, for free, to the highest level in the World, have your Car, Steel, Aluminum, Lumber, Energy, and all other businesses, QUADRUPLE in size, WITH ZERO TARIFFS OR TAXES, if Canada becomes the cherished 51st State of the United States of America."

Carney, representing the Liberal Party, was initially predicted to lose to his Conservative rival Pierre Poilievre. However, a late surge in the polls, fueled by a strong anti-Trump message, allowed Carney to regain the lead.

Last month, Trump stirred controversy by claiming that the border between the two neighboring countries had been "artificially drawn with a ruler" by someone years ago.
