Donald Trump claimed he proposed sending U.S. military forces into Mexico to help stop the flow of fentanyl into the United States, according to Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum.

Speaking at a press conference Monday, Sheinbaum sought to ease tensions, saying communication between the two leaders had so far been "very good."

Sheinbaum said she rejected Trump’s offer, stating that Mexico’s territory and sovereignty are inviolable. However, she emphasized that the two countries would continue to cooperate to address the issue—just without U.S. military presence on Mexican soil.

Earlier in his term, Trump had threatened to impose tariffs on Mexican goods due to what he saw as insufficient efforts to combat drug trafficking. Those tariffs were later lifted after both countries agreed to work together on the matter.

Mexico has since deployed an additional 10,000 soldiers to the border and extradited 29 high-ranking cartel members to face trial in the United States.
