The discovery took place in the city of Gdansk, in northern Poland. Researchers working for the company ArcheoScan came across a large funerary stele.

Since 2023, a team of archaeologists has been conducting extensive research in the Śródmieście district, the historic center of Gdansk. It was in this location, known for its archaeological treasures, that the funerary stele dating from the Middle Ages was discovered. On July 2, ArcheoScan reported on its social media that this monument had been exquisitely carved from limestone. According to experts, it may be the burial place of a key historical figure.

Archaeological Treasures

A knight standing, holding a sword aloft and wearing what may be a bascinet: this is what the stele represents, reports the Futura-sciences website. The man is wearing a pair of ornamented shoes and chainmail. Analyzing its appearance, the researchers estimated that the tombstone could have been built in the 14th century. According to them, this image is attributed to knights or commanders of high authority. For two years, discoveries at this site have continued. In recent weeks, 250 graves and coffins have been discovered, in addition to the remains of a small wooden church dating back to 1140.

A Medieval City Under Control

The city of Gdansk is populated by stories and ghosts, and this discovery is proof of this. The Teutonic Knights seized the city at the beginning of the 14th century, a period marked by violence and massacres. To keep the region under their control, they committed acts of unspeakable atrocity against the population. The knight discovered in Śródmieście is said to have been a member of this much-feared order, and even to have reigned supreme over northern Central Europe for over a century.
