Denmark has announced plans to swiftly begin enlisting women into its armed forces, citing rising tensions with Russia and the need to bolster security in Greenland.

Following Sweden and Norway, Denmark becomes the third NATO member to integrate women into its regular military ranks.

This shift in strategy comes as several nations ramp up their defense capabilities in response to growing concerns over Russian aggression. Starting in 2026, Danish women will be eligible to join the military, with the government expediting its plans to expand the armed forces.

Denmark’s Minister of Defense, Troels Lund Poulsen, previously warned about the looming threat from Moscow: "Within two years, Russia could pose a credible threat to one or several NATO countries if NATO does not build up its own military power at the same rate as Russia. This calls for swift political action. The urgency of the situation means that we need to be able to invest in and build up fighting capability at increased speed."

He further emphasized the need for efficient procurement and cooperation: "We only have a limited influence on production times, but if we use our right to award contracts directly, we can save time. Furthermore, we must deepen our collaboration with the defense industry and our close allies, ensuring that we are properly trained to use the equipment as soon as it is delivered. »
