Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has urged that national defense become a top priority, calling for increased military spending to avoid what she described as a potential “game over” scenario.

Frederiksen announced a more flexible stance toward the European Union, emphasizing the urgent need for Europe to rearm in the face of growing threats from Russia.

As Danes, we will always be tough in the negotiations on the budget. We don’t want money to be spent on things that are not necessary for Europe. So we will be tough — but being a part of the Frugal Four is no longer the right place for us,” she said on Tuesday.

For me, the most important thing is to rearm Europe. That’s my starting point, and that’s my conclusion in all discussions. Because if Europe is not able to protect and defend ourselves, then it’s game over at some point. So rearming Europe is, for me, number one,” she added.

In recent months, several NATO member states have taken steps to significantly boost their defense budgets.

Just last month, EU member states agreed on a €150 billion low-interest loan program to dramatically increase military spending across the bloc.
