Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has announced that Copenhagen will increase its investments in Greenland to push back against renewed interest from U.S. President Donald Trump.

Since returning to the White House, Trump has repeatedly expressed his desire to acquire the Arctic territory, which is rich in mineral resources, gas, and oil. He has not ruled out military intervention to seize control of Greenland, which remains under Danish sovereignty.

We are willing to invest more in the development of Greenlandic society,” Frederiksen said during a joint press conference alongside leaders from Greenland and the Faroe Islands.

This could be ports, and it could be another type of critical infrastructure that both has a defense and military perspective, but which can also be used, for example, in relation to tourism or raw materials extraction,” she added.

Greenlanders have firmly rejected the idea of falling under U.S. control, even as many in Greenland continue to push for full independence from Denmark.

Late last week, French President Emmanuel Macron visited Greenland to deliver a clear message: "The territory is not for sale."
