‘Unacceptable pressure’: Denmark slams US for officials visit in Greenland this week

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has accused the United States of exerting "unacceptable pressure" on Greenland as American officials prepare to visit the territory later this week.

Following her remarks, U.S. Vice President JD Vance announced that he would also join the trip.

"There was so much excitement around Usha’s visit to Greenland this Friday that I decided I didn’t want her to have all that fun by herself, and so I’m going to join her," Vance said in a video posted on X.

Frederiksen had stated on national television just hours earlier that Washington could not organize a private visit involving U.S. officials.

"I have to say that it is unacceptable pressure being placed on Greenland and Denmark in this situation. And it is pressure that we will resist," the Danish leader told TV 2.

In an appearance on Danmarks Radio, Frederiksen also reiterated that former U.S. President Donald Trump’s intentions to acquire the Arctic territory were genuine.

She added: "It is clearly not a visit that is about what Greenland needs or what Greenland wants from a visit. Therefore, no matter how we twist it, it is a completely unacceptable pressure on Greenland, the Greenlandic politicians, and the Greenlandic population, but it is also on Denmark and thus the kingdom."
