After being missing for 529 days on Kangaroo Island in South Australia, Valerie, a miniature dachshund, has been safely rescued by Kangala Wildlife Rescue.

The dachshund disappeared in November 2023 while she was on holiday with her owners in Stokes Bay, one of the most beautiful beaches in Australia. With the help of locals, searches were conducted, but the owners had to return home without her.

From time to time, Valerie was seen in the area, but for over a year she managed to elude capture on the vast, wild, and remote island. Her story gained international attention as people admired her resilience.

In March of this year, Valerie was spotted again, and a targeted search effort was launched. After weeks of coordinated volunteer efforts, including setting traps, using cameras, and travelling over 5000 kilometres by searching volunteers, the dog was finally captured safely and in good health.
