The Reds struck early, opening the scoring after just four minutes through new signing Hugo Ekitike, before the Londoners hit back from the spot with Jean-Philippe Mateta converting a penalty in the 17th minute.
Liverpool wasted no time regaining the lead, with fellow new arrival Jeremie Frimpong finding the net just four minutes after the Eagles’ equaliser.
In the second half, Ismaila Sarr brought Crystal Palace level again, forcing the match to be decided by a penalty shootout.
