Last October, Russia shared a video featuring a Soviet weapon that was used during the Second World War.

It was a D-74 howitzer from the 1940s. It was quickly replaced by the M-46 cannon, which boasted a much greater range than its predecessor, reports Midi Libre. Russia had thus liquidated its stock of D-74s by sending them to allied countries of the Soviet Union, notably Vietnam and China. This is precisely why there is concern about the reappearance of this weapon on the battlefield. It's said to have been used to attack Ukrainian forces in the Donetsk region.

In Ukraine, it's generally believed that North Korea supplied this howitzer to Moscow.

Putin's Unambiguous Message

According to Jennifer Kavanagh, director of military analysis at the Washington-based think tank Defense Priorities, the use of this weapon is not a mere coincidence. It's a clear message from the Kremlin leader. "Publicising the use of the D-74 could be Russia's way of signalling its ability to remain powerful and continue fighting for some time yet."
