Commercial ties between Beijing and Moscow have taken a hit in early 2025, with Russian exports to China falling by 10%.

Between January and April, exports of key goods—including oil, timber, and food—dropped by 9.1%. Year-over-year, trade between the two countries declined by 7.5%, according to a recent report by China’s General Administration of Customs.

Russia primarily supplies China with oil, gas, coal, and some food products, such as seafood.

The Kremlin recently announced that President Vladimir Putin will travel to China in August to discuss future trade partnerships with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

While China claims neutrality in the war in Ukraine, Beijing has defended Moscow by blaming the West for provoking the conflict.

Despite ongoing Western sanctions on Russia—now in their third year—China has increased trade efforts to help support its strategic ally.
