US President Donald Trump has announced a travel ban for citizens of twelve countries. He is doing this "to protect the national security and national interests of the United States and its people."

Citizens from Afghanistan, Myanmar, Chad, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen will no longer be welcome in the United States from Monday, the White House announced.

There will also be restrictions for citizens from Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan and Venezuela who wish to enter American territory: they will not be granted permanent access to the US and will not be eligible for tourist or student visas.

President Trump also imposed travel bans during his first term. This led to chaos at American airports and to legal disputes in the courts at the time.
