‘Our terms’: Carney sets the tone amid Trump threats

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has stated that Canada deserves respect from the United States and that any future trade and security negotiations with President Donald Trump will take place “on our terms.”

Speaking to the BBC as polls closed across the country, Carney made it clear he would only travel to the U.S. for “serious” discussions that respect Canada’s sovereignty.

According to the Prime Minister’s office, a future meeting between Carney and Trump is already being planned.

“The leaders agreed on the importance of Canada and the U.S. working together – as independent, sovereign nations – for their mutual betterment,” a statement from the office read.

Since his re-election, Trump has repeatedly urged Canada to become the “51st state” of the United States to streamline trade relations. While Carney dismissed the billionaire’s rhetoric as provocative, he said a “win-win” agreement was still possible.

“There is a partnership to be had – an economic and security partnership,” he said. “But it’s going to be a very different one than we’ve had in the past.”
