California rocked by many earthquakes in less than 12 hours

California experienced three earthquakes in less than 12 hours, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

Two tremors were detected just a few miles from San Francisco, while the third struck Monterey County around 4 PM.

A study by Michigan Tech University found that earthquakes below a magnitude of 2.5 are typically not felt by the population.

These latest tremors, registering magnitudes of 2.8 and 2.9, caused no reported damage in the affected areas.

While such minor quakes are common, scientists remain concerned about the possibility of the dreaded "Big One" occurring in the coming decades.

Since the beginning of the year, California has recorded: 10,159 earthquakes with magnitudes up to 4.6, 104 earthquakes between magnitude 3 and 4 and 637 earthquakes between magnitude 2 and 3.
