Beijing mocks Trump’s claims than China is ‘suffering greatly’

Beijing has pushed back against recent claims by Donald Trump that the Chinese economy is “suffering greatly” due to high U.S. tariffs.

Washington has imposed tariffs of up to 145% on Chinese imports, while Beijing responded with its own tariffs of 125%, escalating an ongoing trade war that has disrupted global markets.

Despite Trump’s recent claim that talks with China have begun, Beijing continues to deny any such discussions. However, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is scheduled to travel to Switzerland this week to begin preliminary talks with a Chinese delegation.

Responding to Trump’s remarks, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian told reporters:
“No external shock can change the fundamentals of China's stable economic foundation, numerous advantages, strong resilience, and great potential. Nor can it alter the solid momentum of China’s high-quality development.”

He added: “This tariff war was provoked by the U.S. side. If the U.S. truly wants to resolve the issue through dialogue and negotiation, it should stop threatening and pressuring, and instead engage in talks with China based on equality, respect, and reciprocity.”
