Behind the scenes, Trump believes Russia could win the war

Although he aimed to be reassuring after a two-hour phone call with the Russian president, praising a “constructive exchange” and claiming talks would begin “immediately”, Donald Trump may not be singing the same tune behind the scenes.

"If I didn't think President Putin wanted to put an end to this, I wouldn't even be talking about it," explained Donald Trump from the White House, just hours after his conversation with Vladimir Putin. But behind this display of optimism, it appears the US president is telling a very different story.

Concerning talking points

According to Bloomberg, Trump's recent statements stand in contrast to the current American disengagement from Kiev. As reported by L’Indépendant, in recent days the United States has stopped threatening Russia with new sanctions. In private discussions with European leaders, the White House occupant has even echoed several Kremlin talking points: the suggestion that Moscow is gaining ground on the front lines and that it could win the war.

Having noticed these worrying signals, the Ukrainian President sent a note to his American counterpart: "I ask him not to abandon efforts to build peace. The only one who benefits is Putin," declared Zelensky.
