Scientists on high alert as massive asteroids near Earth

At least three sizable asteroids that could potentially strike Earth are currently located in a neighboring region of our solar system, according to a new study.

Researchers have warned that Venus is obstructing our view of numerous near-Earth asteroids that may pose a serious risk of impact.

A team of Brazilian, French, and Italian scientists has discovered that several asteroids orbiting in sync with Venus are extremely difficult to detect, as they are often hidden by the Sun’s glare.

The asteroids 2020 SB, 524522, and 2020 CL1 are being closely monitored due to the potential danger they represent. Alarmingly, these objects appear to be maintaining a trajectory directed toward Earth.

“Twenty co-orbital asteroids of Venus are currently known. Co-orbital status protects these asteroids from close approaches to Venus, but it does not protect them from encountering Earth,” the research team warned in a report published in the journal Astronomy and Astrophysics.

Back in February, NASA ruled out the possibility of asteroid 2024 YR4 impacting Earth, offering some relief.
