Tottenham and Arsenal are now battling it out for the signature of Eberechi Eze, who last weekend lifted the Community Shield with Crystal Palace after their win over Liverpool at Wembley.
Arsenal were the first to show interest, but heavy spending in the summer transfer window means they need to sell players, with Leandro Trossard likely to be among those leaving as his playing time is set to shrink following the arrivals of Viktor Gyökeres and Noni Madueke in attack.
Spurs, meanwhile, are in urgent need of attacking reinforcements after Son Heung-min’s move to MLS and a knee injury to James Maddison during pre-season.
Eze’s release clause is set at £68 million and is due to expire this Friday. However, the Eagles are unwilling to let him go for anything less than the full amount stated in the clause.
Arsenal representatives have been in talks with the England international for several weeks, but no formal bid has yet been submitted to Crystal Palace.
The Premier League kicks off this weekend, with Crystal Palace travelling to Chelsea for their opening fixture.
