A massive, armed raid on tourists took place in Indian Kashmir on Wednesday.

The events occurred in the Baisaran Valley in Pahalgam. This region is also known as “Mini Switzerland” in India and is popular with Indian tourists. However, the area often experiences unrest because India and Pakistan have disputed the sovereignty over Kashmir since 1947. The area has a Muslim majority. There are often uprisings and this armed raid seems to stem from that.

Almost all the victims are men residing in India, with one of them hailing from Nepal. The attack has not yet been claimed by any group.

A day after the attack, two suspected rebels were killed in a firefight. This is reported by the Indian army, which itself refers to them as “terrorists”. The army immediately launched a large-scale manhunt after the group of tourists was shot at. It remains quite unclear who exactly is behind the deadly raid and what the motive is. The death toll has already risen to 26 tourists who lost their lives.
