Stored in your kitchen cupboards, are your potatoes sprouting far too quickly? We reveal an incredibly effective grandma's tip to prevent this problem.

Reduced sprouting process? Firstly, don't wash your potatoes before storing them in your cupboards, as moisture could promote sprouting as well as the decomposition of the goods. Next, place your potatoes next to apples in a dry place, not in the refrigerator as this could deteriorate your food. Finally, regularly check their condition to assess their edibility, advises the website Linternaute.

A precious gas

You may have understood, the trick lies in what accompanies your potatoes in their storage place: the famous apples! Indeed, apples release a gas called ethylene which helps reduce the ripening of fruits and vegetables that are likely to surround them. And this is also why we advise against storing certain fruits together. Potatoes, onions, and fruits don't make a good mix.

Thus, next to apples, your potatoes placed in a basket will stay fresh longer and sprout less quickly.
